Kaddish, also known as the "Mourner's Prayer," is said in honor of the deceased. This prayer is spoken collectively and serves as an affirmation of Jewish faith as well as a reminder that no mourner is alone in their grief.
Kaddish has been said for nearly 2,000 years to honor and commemorate parents or other family members who have passed away. It is one of the most widely recognized prayers of the Jewish faith and is one of its fundamental customs, reflecting on life, tradition and family. Reciting the Mourner's Kaddish is one of Judaism’s greatest mitzvahs, or good deeds.
Kaddish must be said in a quorum of 10, which is called a minyan. Traditionally, the Kaddish is said daily for 12 months after the passing of a parent, and again on the Yahrzeit, the anniversary of their passing. For those who are unable to recite the prayer, another Jewish individual may do so in their place as, according to the Torah, all Jews are one.
May His great Name grow exalted and sanctified in the world that He created as He willed. May He give reign to His kingship in our lifetimes and in our days, and in the lifetimes of the entire Family of Israel, swiftly and soon. Now respond: Amen.
Blessed, praised, glorified, exalted, extolled, mighty, upraised, and lauded be the Name of the Holy One, Blessed is He beyond any blessing and song, praise and consolation that are uttered in the world. Now respond: Amen.
May there be abundant peace from Heaven, and life, upon us and upon all Israel. Now respond: Amen.
He Who makes peace in His heights, may He make peace upon us, and upon all Israel. Now respond: Amen.
